A useful DIY solar system starts with energy demand, not a shopping list. Estimate what you want to run, for how long, and under what conditions.
The five jobs in a small system
- Collect: photovoltaic cells or modules.
- Control: regulate charging and protect components.
- Store: batteries when energy is needed after sunlight.
- Convert: an inverter when AC power is required.
- Protect: fuses/breakers, suitable conductors, connectors and enclosures.
Start small
Phones, lights and modest electronics are easier to quantify than whole-home backup. Once loads are known, generation and storage can be sized around real energy needs.
