A spherical solar panel is a photovoltaic concept that distributes light-collecting surfaces around a curved or three-dimensional form rather than keeping every cell on one flat plane.

Why researchers explore 3D PV

Different faces can collect light at different solar angles. MIT's 3D photovoltaic research found that tested structures could deliver more energy per base area than stationary flat panels, with gains depending heavily on geometry and conditions.

Evidence note. Research on three-dimensional photovoltaics supports the general idea that geometry can change energy collected per footprint. That does not independently validate the Solar Innovator build or any specific seller performance claim. Product-specific claims should be treated as seller claims unless independently tested.

The tradeoff

More surface area and orientation diversity can also mean more structure, wiring, shading interactions, fabrication effort and cost. “More energy per footprint” is not the same as “higher cell efficiency.”
